Abstract

In this paper, the authors preview the papers of this double issue of Babel, dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, in the International Year of Indigenous Languages (2019). First languages of Australia- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages- are introduced, in relation to current use and census data, community collaboration and insights from teachers. They are described using a 'languages ecologies' approach, how their learning and teaching can be understood in the complex linguistic and cultural landscapes of communities using and learning these languages. The Framework for Aboriginal Languages and Torres Strait Islander languages, from the Australian Curriculum: Languages, is explained, through its first language, language revival and second (additional) language learner pathways, and how these are evidenced in the papers of this issue. Each paper is explained in relation to the languages, communities and learning practices it addresses. As a collection, the papers provide perspectives across each of the language ecologies and learner pathways.
