Direct foreign investment in the ASEAN countries
Abstract
The realisation of the ASEAN economic cooperation schemes
trade liberalisation, industrial complementation and a common approach
to dialoque with developed countries - will have potentially important
implications for direct foreign investment flows as well as concomitant
welfare effects. An assessment of these effects necessitates a clear
understanding of the foreiqn investment pattern prevailing in the region.
The task of this thesis is to facilitate this understanding by developing
a framework for analysing the determinants of the geographical
pattern of direct foreiqn investment flows and to apply it to the ASEAN
region. It should be noted at the outset that the object of the
thesis is to orovide a general overview of the country structure of
direct foreign investment flows in the ASEAN region, which will hopefully
set the staae for the evaluation of other issues. Furthermore,
it is hoped that the investment indices developed in this thesis will
lead to further and more detailed analysis of the geographical pattern
of foreiqn investment in the ASEAN region.
