Abstract
Assimilation has always been a powerful social force in Australia. Despite efforts at cultural diversity, Australians still need to feel and be seen as one people, and in such oneness there is little room for disparate views about a country considered 220 years old by the white mainstream and 60,000 years old by the native peoples.
