Abstract

Description

This picture, designed for use as a decoration in a home, or as an object of reverence and worship, shows Siva in one of his many aspects. Here he is seated like an ascetic in the lotus posture of meditation, sitting on a tiger skin, his body smeared with ashes, snake[s] coiled around his neck and arms. The Siva trident, a symbol of the god, is stuck in the ground beside him. From his head pours the river Ganges, a reminder of the myth that the sacred river first fell from the Himalayas onto the head of Siva.
