Abstract

In This Chapter, I will be discussing issues of dialogism and monologism in realtion to genres of epic-like sung narrative in the highlands on Papua New Guinea. The Term "dialogism"in its Bakhtinian sense, of course, refers not to dialogue per se but to the intermingling of distinct social "voices" in given stretches of discourse. Likewise, "monologism" as used by the contributors to this volume refers not to monologue per se but to the contruction of an apparently unitary, transcendent voice.
