Spatial soundfield recording using multiple higher order microphones
Abstract
Spatial soundfield recording draws significant interests in noise cancellation, source localisation and entertainment applications. It is a complex and challenging problem in acoustic signal processing implementations, due to large numbers of microphones required and its extreme precision demand for equipment synchronisation and sensor positioning. This project presents an experimental design of a 2D soundfield recording system using multiple higher order microphones with its auxiliary systems that synchronise multiple recording channels and automatically localise microphones. This system was tested with both nearfield and farfield recordings of a soundfield constructed by loudspeakers in a reverberant room. The verification results show that soundfield recordings had reproduction error less than 10%. It proves that by higher order coefficients translation and with sufficient support from peripheral technologies, spatial soundfield recording over large areas is able to be implemented on general audio equipments using ordinary microphones, amplifiers, audio interfaces and loudspeakers.
