Tracking Progress toward Health and Equity through the Millennium Development Goals-Lessons for Public Health Surveillance

Abstract

In this chapter we explore the example of the health-related Millennium Development Goals to draw out lessons about collecting public health surveillance (PHS) data, and the potential for the data to be used to improve inequalities within and between countries in health. We use the example of Bangladesh to tease out the reasons for a resource-poor country managing to achieve many of the targets set for the MDGs. Finally, we discuss a framework for transforming PHS, drawing on the common framework for monitoring, evaluating and reviewing national plans and strategies. Show more
