This article reviews the annual news of the Pacific countries and territories, characterized by their cultural, ethnic and political diversity. A first section is dedicated to the two great giants of the area, Australia (which saw the departure of its charismatic Prime Minister Kevin Rudd) and New Zealand, where John Key had to weather the financial crisis and give his support to those affected by the earthquake. of Christchurch. Subsequently, the author analyzes in depth the political game in Papua New Guinea, which although in appearance is stable, in his opinion is the most ungovernable country in the region. The chronicle extends to Solomon, Vanuatu and Fiji, the latter still marked by authoritarian drift after the 2006 military coup led by General Baininarama and increasing pressure on the media. Later, the article summarizes the situation in Tonga (where the monarchy and the nobility are gradually giving way to the weight of the democratic opposition), the Bougainville region (which is advancing in its autonomy), Tuvalu, Nauru, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Polynesia French (the latter, overseas territories of an extra-regional power - France - that serve to exemplify a type of common relationship in the area). As a conclusion to the text, the author underlines the growing involvement of the People's Republic of China in the "oceanic continent" which, after the end of its diplomatic competition with Taiwan, aspires to become the great pole of attraction for governments that manage dispersed populations and scarce resources. the Bougainville region (which is advancing in its autonomy), Tuvalu, Nauru, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, French Polynesia (the latter, overseas territories of an extra-regional power - France - that serve to exemplify a type of common relationship in the area ).
