Abstract

This study investigates the impact of social networks in an organisational setting on pay increases, promotions and layoffs. Using social network theory as the foundation, individuals' relationships with peers, immediate supervisors, and management, as well as an organisational culture that formalises social networking activities, are found to have significant effects on pay increases, promotions, and layoffs. This remains yes, even after controlling for tenure in the firm and work performance.
