Cultural advice

The Australian National University acknowledges, celebrates and pays our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people of the Canberra region and to all First Nations Australians on whose traditional lands we meet and work, and whose cultures are among the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that ANU Library collections may include images, names, voices, and other representations of deceased persons.

Material in the collection may contain terms, language or views that reflect the period in which the item was created and may be considered inappropriate today.

Abstract

Photography has always played an important role in forming our sense of place. Individual photographs have been crucial in establishing the significance of special places in Australian culture. Now, however, the digital revolution and the online revolution have opened up new possibilities for creating expanded photographic views of Australian places from archival photographs and uploaded personal photographs. These go beyond the conventional single frame into what we call a "metaview", a coherent view made up of multiple online images. How is this emerging form, hosted by libraries, museums and major websites, affecting the formation of a sense of place in Australia?.
