Abstract
This paper examines how the province of Papua responded quickly to close its borders, indicating a level of distrust in the national authorities’ ability to protect Papuans from COVID-19. It also reasons that the virus is perceived by native Papuans as an existential threat given their already vulnerable position as Indigenous people.
