Abstract

During the Northern Lau Vents Expedition, the RV Southern Surveyor navigated the area between New Caledonia, Samoa and Fiji, and discovered new submarine volcanoes amid some of the fastest spreading regions of the Australian-Indian Plate. An international team of scientists and crew collaborated in these discoveries, and was led by ANU geology researcher Prof Richard Arculus and accompanied by ANU researcher and science photographer Charles Tambiah. In this fusion exhibition, mapped ocean floor patterns consisting of ridges and volcanoes are contrasted with the ship's structures and crew, lava rocks, tropical skies and stormy seas.
