Slow Violence (Gospers Mountain)

Abstract

Slow Violence (Gospers Mountain) is a large-scale embroidered map of the 2019 Gospers Mountain and Kanangra Boyd National Park bushfires. It translates data that visualises fire damage to vegetation by hand-stitching vivid coloured thread stitched into a thermal blanket. This highly detailed technique, and the symbolism of an emergency blanket, encompasses a repetitive practice that simultaneously destroys and repairs its grounding substrate to convey the concept of 'slow violence'.
