On October 1, 1868 three Chinese men appeared before His Honour, Judge Forbes at the Castlemaine County Court in Victoria. What I will present takes the form of microhistory, but perhaps cases such as this enable us to ground our conclusions about cross-cultural encounters in the minutiae of quotidian experience and historical specificity.
