This article uses the standard neoclassical framework to compute the rate of investment necessary to achieve a sustained growth rate in per capita income of 6 per cent annually. The analysis presents three messages: the rate of productivity growth must rise if the target rate of growth is to be realised; a significant rise in investment, absent major structural changes, will entail large investments within the primary and rural non-mining sector of the economy; and higher productivity growth will ease the need for very large increases in investment.en_AU
