Integration of irrigated and dryland farming in the southern Murray basin : a geographic interpretation
Abstract
This thesis argues that there is a well-defined
regional pattern of integration between irrigated and
non-irrigated (dryland) farming in the southern Murray
Basin of particular significance to programmes for
combating production uncertainty. This pattern is
exp~a1ned in terms of the physical and cultural forces
producing spatial differences in types of irrigated
products and two basic situations are distinguished.
Firstly, "on-farm" int egrati on where irrigated and nonirrigated
lands are used by the same farmer; secondly,
"off-farm" integration where exchanges of factors of
production (stock, stock Ieed t and stock agistment) occur
between irrigation and dryland farmers.
