Book review: Appropriated pasts: Indigenous peoples and the colonial culture of archaeology
Abstract
This book makes me wonder why Australian
historians have so readily agreed to
a history that starts at 1788. Perhaps the
First Fleet's entertaining publishing enterprises
have been too seductive. Whereas
historians may doubt that it is possible
to write history without archival word
middens, archaeologists doubt that one
can write without material discoveries.
Sources and methodological expertise
have created a major chasm between
the colonising disciplines of archaeology,
prehistory and history
