Organometallic dendrimers and multi-state switches for nonlinear optics
Abstract
Organometallic complexes, and in particular metal alkynyl complexes, are playing an increasingly important role in the field of nonlinear optics (NLO). This thesis aims to extend the contribution of ruthenium alkynyl complexes in this field. Chapter 1 covers the synthesis and characterization of a series of zero-to second-generation ruthenium alkynyl dendrimers with varied peripheral groups. Wavelength-dependence studies of the third-order nonlinear optical properties of these dendrimers are discussed. Chapter 2 covers the syntheses and characterization of some symmetrical and dipolar multi-state ruthenium alkynyl molecular switches. Electrochemical studies of some of these switches are presented. Wavelength dependence studies of the third-order nonlinear optical properties of a symmetrical and a dipolar switch in six states are discussed.
