Abstract

The billionaire heir-apparent to South Korea’s largest family-owned conglomerate or chaebol, Samsung Electronics, has been jailed [1] for five years for bribery and embezzlement. Lee Jae-yong is alleged to have offered or pledged 41 billion won (US$36 million) in bribes to Choi Soon-sil [2], a confidante of former president Park Geun-hye, in return for political favours.
