Abstract
We rarely read or hear about the toponyms of Antarctica. This is surprising given its size
and the large stake Australia holds on the continent. Antarctica is nearly twice the size of
Australia—excluding its ice shelves, it covers over 13 million km2 compared with 7.7
million km² for Australia (Figure 1).
