African rural-urban migration : the movement to Ghana's towns

Abstract

In the fast-growing populations of the developing tropics, rural areas are no longer able to absorb the vast increases in their populations. In Ghana the result is striking - over a quarter of the population now lives in the towns. This book sets out to examine the kinds of people migrating to the towns, the effect of their migration on the rural areas they leave and the urban areas they adopt, their methods of travel and of solving the problems of accommodation and work, their degree of satisfaction with town life, the numbers returning to the village, and their reasons for doing so. It thus discusses whether and when a truly urban population is created.
