Consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on human capitaldevelopment

Abstract

An outbreak the size of the COVID-19 pandemic would surely significantly impact not only the economy but also human capital development. In Indonesia, however, the true size of this pandemic and its human capital impact is unclear since the number of COVID-19 tests has been low. In this chapter we attempt to estimate the true magnitude of the pandemic and outline a conceptual framework to understand channels from which the COVID-19 pandemic will affect human capital development, particularly in health and education, Copyright © 2021. The pandemic is expected to increase cases of other morbidities, maternal deaths, and less healthy babies and children. In the long run, there is evidence that a pandemic of this size could increase overall mortality cases. Show more
