Abstract

The analysis of Fleischhauer and Lukin was extended by considering the behavior of dark-state polaritons in a solid medium. An investigation of the possibility of using a solid medium to store few-photon laser pulses as coupled excitations between light and matter was presented. The role of inhomogeneous and nonadiabaticity were considered, and the conditions governing the feasibility of the scheme were derived. The results show that hole burning leads to a significant reduction of the number of ions available for the light storage.
