| dc.description.abstract | The situation in Vietnam remains dynamic: no set of conference proceedings can possibly track all the changes. Nevertheless, we believe this volume makes a worthwhile contribution to the study of contemporary Vietnam. As the papers indicate, Southeast Asia's second most populous country is rapidly shaking off the difficulties of a sad and violent past, embarking on a road to rapid development and prosperity. The journey has just begun yet doi moi offers an exciting first step on the road to reform. | |
| dc.description.sponsorship | The Conference was supported financially by the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau (AIDAB) and the Australian Development Studies Network, while the Australian Embassy in Hanoi facilitated getting Vietnamese participants to Canberra for the meeting, no easy task considering the difficulties of communications that existed between the two countries at the time. The visitors program of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade arranged for several key Vietnamese policy-makers to come to Australia at the time of the conference, thus allowing them to participate in the meeting. | en_AU |
