The draft sequence of the human and mouse genomes provides an unparalleled opportunity for understanding the genetic control of immune-cell development. Strategies can begin with a gene sequence and pursue a putative immune-system function by employing mRNA-expression profiling or creating gene knockouts in embryonic stem cells.
