It is well known by those concerned with the origin of life on Earth that Darwinian evolutionary theory has significant limitations. The most important of these, it is argued here, is a mismatch between the central dogma of natural selection and the competitive conditions associated not only with the emergence of life but also with its recovery from major extinction episodes.
