Three spectrally distinct photoreceptors in diurnal and nocturnal Australian ants
Ants are thought to be special among Hymenopterans in having only dichromatic colour vision based on two spectrally distinct photoreceptors. Many ants are highly visual animals, however, and use vision extensively for navigation.
