Riluzole protects against cardiac ischaemia and reperfusion damage via block of the persistent sodium current

Background and purpose: Current strategies to ameliorate cardiac ischaemic and reperfusion damage, including block of the sodium-hydrogen exchanger, are therapeutically ineffective.
