Prevalence, incidence and risk factors of lacunar infarcts in a community sample

BACKGROUND: Lacunar infarcts are small cavitated lesions no larger than 2 cm in diameter. Although often asymptomatic, they have been suggested as an important pathologic substrate of vascular dementia.
