Effect of thermal diffusion on the stability of strongly tilted mantle plume tails
The effect of thermal diffusion on the stability of strongly tilted mantle plume tails is explored by investigating experimentally and numerically the gravitational instability of a rising horizontal cylindrical region of buoyant viscous fluid. At large viscosity ratios, we find that the instability is unaffected by diffusion when the Rayleigh number Ra is greater than about 300.
