In this introduction to his edition of scholarly essays on cultural relations between China and the West from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, William Christie recapitulates and reflects on Western approaches and attitudes to China in the lead up to the turbulent years of the Opium Wars and the 'scramble for China' in the late nineteenth century.
