dc.description.abstract | Melbourne Modern celebrates the contribution of European émigré artists, architects and designers who taught at RMIT after 1945. It surveys the work of Viennese architects, German, Czech and Baltic sculptors and silversmiths, and Dutch and Britain designers. It also includes migrants who arrived in Australia as children and Australian-born artists whose formative experiences in Europe influenced their teaching. Collectively their stories illuminate RMIT's model of inclusion. The profound impact of émigré teaching on the new pedagogy that developed in the 1950s through the 1970s placed the RMIT School of Art and Applied Art at the forefront of Australian art and design education. Melbourne Modern examines the legacy of this rich educational experiment today. My book chapter looks at the emigre artist Udo Sellbach, his contribution to RMIT and his key works including The Target is Man series and his involvement with Broadsheet Magazine. | |
