Description: The tendency to realism gained the upper hand over abstract designing, perhaps under the influence of European art. Riza's contemporary Muhammad Yusuf al-Husaini carried this movement towards a release from the flat designing of the traditional Persian figure drawing, as far as it ever went. Here he makes of the relations of three figures, two kneeling young men and a lady of fashion, an exercise in intersecting forms which for once is composed in depth. Her upraised arms coil about the turban which she has removed from her lover's head and is placing on her own, in a dance movement echoed by the streaming clouds and foliage against the deep blue sky. -- 9.75 x 6.75".
