Introduction: Monsters and Change

This chapter introduces the volume and defines monsters as embodiments of cultural moments. It proposes different avenues for the investigation of how monsters and change intersect: (1) emergence, (2) adaptation, (3) appropriation, (4) amalgamation, (5) extinction, and (6) succession.
