The detection of the binary neutron star inspiral GW170817 by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Advanced Virgo, followed by counterpart observations across a broad electromagnetic spectrum, marks the dawn of multi-messenger astronomy.
