Author(s): Parrot, Andre
Photographer: Arthur Llewellyn Basham
Keywords: Gudea & Ur II-Isin periods, c. 2290-2040;sculpture;stone;book scan
Description: Beautifully executed works in the hard stones diorite and dolerite, "at once convey an impression of majestic serenity and breathe a religious fervour seldom, if ever, expressed with so much power and simplicity". Gudea always had himself portrayed with clasped hands entering the presence of the god. The series of portraits show what Gudea looked like from the ages of about 25 to 40. The feet are massive, but the hands delicate.
