Title: Susa (Imperial Akkadian, Phase III) : Robe of Manishtusu and Obelisk of Manishtusu, c. 2389-2353 BC
Author(s): Parrot, Andre
Photographer: Arthur Llewellyn Basham
Keywords: Mesopotamia : Eridu-'Ubaid period, Early Sumerian period, Fara-Ur I period, Imperial Akkadian period;sculpture;stone;book scan
Description: Owing to systematic mutilation, sculpture in the round is poorly represented. The obelisk of Manishtusu (son of Sargon), a block of diorite entirely covered with inscriptions, is both an invaluable historical document and an artistic achievement heralding, half a millennium ahead, the Code of Hammurabi.
