This is a general view of the river bank of the Ganges at Banaras: showing the palaces built along the river, and the steps (ghats) built down to the river for bathing. The opposite side of the river is barren, without even any houses there, for it is said that if one d[i]es on the other side of the river at Banaras he will be reborn as a jackass.
