According to tradition, the Buddha came three times to Ceylon and on the third visit, accompanied by 500 Arahats, he came to Kelaniya. It has become one of the leading shrines in Theravada Buddhism and is now the headquarters of one of the strongest sects in Ceylon. References to Kelaniya have been made in the chronicles since 300 B.C. This picture shows the main temple, with the edge of the great dagoba showing on the right, and the Bodhi tree, from a shoot of the original tree in Buddhagaya, on the left.
