The artists fell into two main groups: the foreigners, most of whom were Persian, and the Indians. The Persians came from the cities of Tabriz, Meshhed, Bukhara, and Shiraz. Other foreigners may have come from regions north of India: in the Hamzanama, an epic illustrated for Akbar with 1400 paintings, certain cloud forms and demons may have been the work of artists from Nepal, Tibet, and even Ladakh. European influence was also present, although Western characteristics were probably copied from works of art rather than being produced by European artists. The painting shown here portrays a couple dressed in the European style.
