Title: Siva saint, prob. Sundaramurtiswami
Author(s): Rowland, Benjamin
Photographer: Arthur Llewellyn Basham
Keywords: Bronzes - South Indian;copper/bronze;book scan
Series/Report no.: Basham Collection
Description: Shows him as though arrested in sudden ecstasy at the vision of Siva and his court. Figure is cast in tribhanga pose. Hand gestures, etc. give feeling of tremulous movement to the form. Exaggerations of features and proportions such as lotiform eyes and leonine torso, are the same that had been employed for more than a millennium of Indian art. The peculiar combination of these trad. elements, subordinate to elegant attenuation & litheness is characteristic of great South Indian bronze images. -- whom Siva claimed as his disciple on the youth's wedding day.
