dc.description | Fergusson, Vol. II, p. 22 - Rock-cut from ridge (?), never finished. The other side of the Kalugumalai hill had been occupied by Jains and numerous images of their Tirthanakaras are carved upon it, with inscriptions that supply the names of the villages by which the different figures were carved. Now dedicated to Subrahmanya, but said to be originally Jain. Probably 10th/11th century, and if completed would have been one of the most perfect gems of the style. As it is, it was only blocked out, and the upper part only carved, when it was abandoned. In the same rock is excaved [sic] a cave temple dedicated to Ganesha with a pradakshina passage around the shrine. -- 75 miles north of Cape Comorin. Jain bas-relief. | |
