Kailasnath [sic] was dedicated primarily to Siva
dc.descriptionhowever, included in the imagery of this god is the pantheon of Brahmanic figures associated with Siva. Their images are in countless compositions throughout the complex. Here, for example, some appear on their vehicle animals and appear to be riding through an immaterial space toward the entrance of the Nandi shrine. The sculpture is characterised by a dignified grace and plasticity contrasted to the inert wall space forming the background - a feature adopted from Guptan traditions. In many cases of figural decoration, including this one, the subjects do not take on any architectural function whatsoever. They seem to soar right off the walls as if belying the solidity of the material from which they are carved. -- Detail of sculptures: figures separated by columns.
