The English Version of The Story of the Stone by David Hawkes: From a Perspective of Textual Criticism
This essay attempts to use the methodology proposed by Chen Yuan in Examples of Scholarly Editing to examine how David Hawkes organized his translation of Hong Lou Meng (The Story of the Stone). Hu Shih summarized that there are three elements in scholarly editing, namely finding mistakes, correcting them, and justifying the corrections.
