Description: Stupa decoration often reached the highest point of artistic achievement in its intricate detailing, The Sanchi and Bharhut stupas could boast of their fine railing sculpture, Here, at Sarnath, the emphasis has been placed on the body of the stupa itself, Bands of delicately worked floral patterns and geometrically designed borders encircle the mound and, from a distance, give the whole surface of the stupa a rich sculptural effect, Like the detail in our slide, which is worked very finely, some of this decoration seemed to defy the resistance of the stone and actually transforms the surface into a lacework of light and shadow,
