Pacific island countries face problems in their efforts to achieve economic growth with macroeconomic and financial stability. This survey focuses on the current economic situation of island countries and recent policy and institutional measures taken in an attempt to improve upon the recent economic performance. Major developments in agriculture are highlighted as well as the immediate outlook for growth. Where appropriate, performance in the policy and institutional areas is assessed against suggestions made in the recent World Bank economic review of Pacific member countries (World Bank 1991).
