local.description.notes9 photos, comments for each image are taken from back of photos: 1. "Beaverbank" stranding Fanning island July 1959, Jettisoning coconut meal -- 2-3. View of palms lagoon side Tabonan adjacent camp. Many pams throughout similar. Healthy condition but bearing sparsely, September 1955 -- 4. Nature palm in infected area approximately 3/4 mile south of Napunaiora camp in bush section extending from edge of swamp to ocean beach. Breeding place of current pest -- 5. Palm at Napunaiora camp in which pest was first discovered 5th sept. 1955 -- 6. Coconut pest, fronds in this instance have been chewed rather than cut. The pest has penetrated the epidermis of the leaflets and apparently sucked the sap of the young inside tissues. It was from these fronds on the underside of the leaflets that the white grubs, 1/4" long were found. These were rare and may or may not be associated with the beetle. Leaves of these fronds were found to have a web like substance adhering to the which contained quantities of white globules, possibly eggs. -- 7. Young palm attacked in similar fashion to that shown on other photograph but not to the same extent -- 8. View of young palm. Fronds completely eaten through. It was on similarly attacked fronds that the beetle was found in abundance. In most cases they had burrowed into and remained in the frond stem, usually at the end which was cut. -- 9. View of good bearing palms between Fenua Ura and Napunaiora camp. This lagoon side foreshore is very good.
