Paramagnetic metal ions accelerate nuclear spin relaxation; this effect is widely used for distance measurement and called paramagnetic relaxation enhancement (PRE). Theoretical predictions established that, under special circumstances, it is also possible to achieve a reduction in nuclear relaxation rates (negative PRE).
