Description
We have discovered a compact group of galaxies at redshift 2.38, probably representing a proto-elliptical galaxy in the act of bottom-up formation. The group is embedded in an extended (>100 kpc radius) lumpy cloud of gas. This gas cloud is dusty, even at large distances from any of the galaxies.
