In contributing this foreword to a volume containing papers by his colleagues to mark Jack Golson's retirement, it will be my aim to emphasise the qualities of mind and character that have enabled him to set the Department of Prehistory so firmly on its feet in the Research School of Pacific Studies of the Australian National University.
